A young woman spent the night trapped inside her moving driverless car this week after the vehicle failed to recognise a temporary junction.
Jackie Weaver, 30, a textiles student from The De Montfort University, had called her driverless car to collect her from a pub in rural Leicestershire late friday night. The vehicle picked up Miss Weaver without any issues and drove her along rural country lanes towards her parents house - that is until they encountered roadworks. Unable to recognise the temporary junctions installed the night prior, the car circled the 50 meters of roadworks all night, unable to find an exit. Miss Weaver wasn’t aware of how to disable the car's pilot nor the internal locking system and was forced to wait for the car’s battery to die.
The roadworks were only a mile from her parents house - she would’ve been able to walk home if she could have figured out how to override the car’s system - her parents would've been able to hear her calling out, if not for the car’s state-of-the-art soundproofing, but aside from mild dehydration, Miss Weaver is healthy and did not suffer. She jokes that she survived the ordeal thanks to the döner kebab she’d picked up from the pub and rationed - ‘one bite an hour’.
Construction workers found the vehicle the next morning, the battery flat and Jackie fast asleep in the back seat.
Whilst this story worked out fine for young Jackie, we implore readers to check how to disable their car’s pilot to avoid a more serious incident.
