The I-95 is set to become a driverless highway as lawmakers have passed a bill forbidding the use of human-driven cars.
Although restrictions on human-driven cars have been becoming more frequent in recent years, the I-95 is the first major highway to ban them outright. Passage along the east coast will be forever changed.
The law aims to reduce congestion and increase safety on one of the busiest highways in the country. Regular users of the I-95 know just how blocked-up the highway can become during rush hour. The motion gained significant support after test trials suggested that the measure can reduce travel time by up to 25% as well as improving safety and energy efficiency. If the I-95 conversion goes smoothly, other major highways are expected to follow the suit.
Not everyone is happy with the decision, however. Although driverless cars now significantly outnumber human-driven cars, the minority are quick to leverage legal action. Anti-driverless car groups are alleging discrimination, stating that the ban is a violation on their freedom to choose human-driven cars. Protestors also argue that the highway is paid for with their taxes, and therefore they should not be prohibited from using it. Whilst protests are gaining traction online, legal advisors suggest that their allegations won’t hold up in court due to the overwhelmingly positive impact of driverless cars.
Supporters of the measure cite health and safety statistics as another reason to back the ban; with road accidents at an all time low, human-driven cars are now largely considered the more dangerous alternative. They suggest government should buy out the human driven clunkers for everyone's benefit.
‘With advanced A.I, human error is now the most dangerous factor on the road. That is a fact. It is not a question of if we should ban human-driven cars, but when. Let’s face it, human-driven vehicles are a thing of the past, and sooner or later they have to go the same way as the horse and carriage.’
