Researchers Tracked 85% of US News to a Single Source.

Jan 14, 2039.

After untangling a complicated web of news feeds and social media references, researchers at MIT’s Media Lab found that almost all of the US news could be traced back to a single source.

Scientists were surprised by the discovery that as much as 85% of American news is being produced by what seems to be a lone AI aggregator. In their article they raise a concern at what the ramifications of this discovery might be.

The researchers have yet to understand how much of the news from this channel is real, and if the AI is operating autonomously or is under supervision by an unknown party. It is also unclear at the moment whether scientists will ever be able to identify the real news from fakes as most of the references keep leading back to this same single source.

The MIT group has suggested the possibility that this AI might be a direct descendant of the notorious “News on Demand” AI project that was believed to be discontinued a while back. “News on Demand” was a Decentralized Autonomous Network which was trying to adjust the narrative of world events by creating artificial news feeds. Since the flow of Internet content is impossible to control, the program focused instead on creating context by flooding the web with junk information to make it difficult to uncover the truth.

The project was available for hire to the highest bidder for some time and was rumored to be used by several different government agencies to create public consent for some unpopular government decisions. It is believed that “News on Demand” led to increased public polarization and sometimes real life violence. The network was mostly shut down by Feds after it gained too much notoriety and independence, but parts of it were later retooled by for-profit corporations for advertisement and promotion  purposes.

Scientists fear that their unsettling discovery could point to the rebirth or evolution of the sinister “News on Demand” program, as they now scramble to understand the ways it was able to exist unnoticed for so long. It might mean that  the network managed to survive the shutdown or evolve all by itself from the later versions of the original AI.
